Music: A Very Short Introduction by Nicholas Cook
Requirements: PDF Reader, 3.1 mb
Overview: What is music? How is it constructed? How is it consumed? Why do you enjoy it at all? In Music: A Very Short plays Introduction, Nicholas Cook invites us to really think about music and the role it plays in our lives and our ears. Drawing on a number of accessible examples, the author prompts us to call on our own musical experiences in order to think more critically about the roles of the performers and the listener, about music as a commodity and an experience, what it means to understand music, and the values we ascribe to it.
This very short introduction, written with both humor and flair, begins with a sampling of music as human activity and then goes on to consider the slippery phenomenon of how music has become an object of thought. Covering not only Western and classical music, Cook touches on all types from rock to Indonesian music and beyond. Lessons from Everest: Seven Powerful Steps to the Top of the World by Dr. Tim Warren
Requirements: .ePUB Reader, 5.16 MB
Overview: “Into Thin Air” meets “The Secret” with a splash of humor! After a devastating failed attempt to climb Mt. Everest in 2007 and a brief period of mourning, Dr. Tim Warren became focused on learning the lessons that had been revealed to him while hiking alone for three days down the Khumbu Valley of Nepal to heal his damaged lung tissue in the luxury of oxygen-rich lower altitude.
He felt an overpowering desire to return to the mountain the next year and experienced a clear vision of himself at the summit and arriving safely back in base camp. After testing those lessons over the next year-and-a-half, and within an inch of his life, he achieved this goal. Equally importantly, he realized that the lessons learned on the “Big E” were universal to people seeking to overcome difficulties in life or simply to edge a little closer to their full potential. Lessons From Everest describes seven lessons, each a stepping stone to greater understanding and awareness of the reader’s inner journey to their own Everest with a healthy dose of seat-of-your-pants adventure.

The Happiness Corner: Reflections So Far by Ava Miles
Requirements: .ePUB Reader, 2.66 MB
Overview: Millions of readers have fallen in love with Ava’s bestselling books…come join the family. Fans of Brene Brown and Gretchen Rubin’s THE HAPPINESS PROJECT will love this uplifting and powerful personal story.
International Bestselling Author Ava Miles presents a heartwarming and romantic second-chance story about two people who rediscover their love for each other…and what it means to be a family. Connected to her bestselling Dare Valley series and what Publisher’s Weekly called “an appealing story,” this romance is guaranteed to make you believe in love all over again.
In 2013, Ava left a successful, six-figure career working as a conflict expert rebuilding war zones to launch herself as a writer.
What most people don’t know is that choice was born on a transformational night of self-discovery in war-torn Sierra Leone when Ava realized writing made her happy—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Living on the street of Just Okay wasn’t good enough. She made a right turn at what she calls The Happiness Corner and never looked back.
In these reflections, Ava shares how she dared to say no to negative people and patterns in her life that drained her natural positive energy, remained positive with a best friend with cancer, discovered pursuits that increased her happiness like dancing and play dates with the neighborhood boy, and, most of all, how she chose to stay happy and spread her happiness message as a bestselling author.

Download The Objective Leader by Elizabeth R. Thornton (.ePUB)

The Objective Leader: How to Leverage the Power of Seeing Things As They Are by Elizabeth R. Thornton
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 1.4MB | Retail
Overview: We are all subjective—it’s human nature. We overreact to situations; we judge people too quickly and unfairly; we take something personally when it was not really meant that way. As a result, we lose relationships, reputation, money, and peace of mind. And in our ever-more-complex world, leaders must make decisions faster and with more conflicting information; widespread insecurity makes people territorial and risk-averse; and the consequences of every action are played out on a disproportionately large stage. Imagine how much more prepared Mitt Romney could have been for his landslide loss on election night, if his advisors had acknowledged the facts staring them in the face.

To succeed, we must consciously seek to increase our objectivity—seeing and accepting things as they are without projecting our mental models, fears, background, and personal experiences onto them. This way, we not only avoid costly cognitive errors, but open ourselves to engage new cultures, new markets, and new opportunities. In The Objective Leader, Thornton draws on her original research, as well as her years of experience as a manager and entrepreneur, to offer proven strategies for identifying limiting and unproductive ways of thinking and creating powerful new mental models that ensure continued success.

Download Turner by Stéphanie (Stephanie) Angoh (.ePUB)

Turner by Stephanie Angoh
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 7.4MB
Overview: At fifteen, Turner was already exhibiting View of Lambeth. He soon acquired the reputation of an immensely clever watercolourist. A disciple of Girtin and Cozens, he showed in his choice and presentation of theme a picturesque imagination which seemed to mark him out for a brilliant career as an illustrator. He travelled, first in his native land and then on several occasions in France, the Rhine Valley, Switzerland and Italy. He soon began to look beyond illustration. However, even in works in which we are tempted to see only picturesque imagination, there appears his dominant and guiding ideal of lyric landscape. His choice of a single master from the past is an eloquent witness for he studied profoundly such canvases of Claude as he could find in England, copying and imitating them with a marvellous degree of perfection. His cult for the great painter never failed. He desired his Sun Rising through Vapour and Dido Building Carthage to be placed in the National Gallery side by side with two of Claude’s masterpieces. And, there, we may still see them and judge how legitimate was this proud and splendid homage. It was only in 1819 that Turner went to Italy, to go again in 1829 and 1840. Certainly Turner experienced emotions and found subjects for reverie which he later translated in terms of his own genius into symphonies of light and colour.
